  • sometimes cutting high frequencies does help, but if you want room for the hi hats, just highpass em more then everything else, highpassing is the better option for avoiding mud

  • high passing will completely remove frequencies below the threshold, it's used to remove stuff like sub-bass which can muddy up the mix, a muddy mix is full of deep frequencies which compete with each other and begin drowning each other out, i would add high pass on the entire mix at 45 Hz just to make sure sub-bass is removed

    • now also keep in mind you can go farther with the highpass on some instruments in order to give them their own space within the mix so they don't interfere with other instruments as well, a horn for example is a bit more high pitched than a bass, and should be highpassed a bit more then the bass,
