Make sure you have either audio or MIDI clips in your project, and they'll appear in your timeline (a new synthesizer for instance, automatically makes a 'Notes' channel. Double-click within that channel to make a MIDI clip). If you want to swap between the timeline and desktop view, hold 'Shift' and 1, 2 or 3 to alternate between the views :)
