all good! If the number of steps is divisible by four it'll feel "right" as a 4/4 time signature.
If you put down 4 kicks and they all have an equal spacing between them, it's called four on the floor and is extremely common. Of course you can move them around for more interesting patterns, but so long as your rhythm stays inside that framework (8 steps, 16 steps, 32 ect.) then you're all good!
I think what happened was you programed 42 steps into your pattern and had 3 variations. Try 32 & 4
