it clips because it exceeds what is allowed, so it distorts the signal, it makes noise you don't generally want

really though, that is a result of clipping. i think a picture would explain it better

turn off the limiter, when the light turns red, that is clipping. you need to turn things down so that they don't clip, but make sure the mix stays reasonable as well
a lot of artists today make it clip about 1.5 db on purpose though :p
