some wierd compression going on in this, seems to randomly get suddenly quite a lot

probably long release and lots of bass

I think my issue with it is that it sounds like sidechaining with a really long hold and short release (compression settings, not 808/kick/bass or whatever is giving the sidechain input). My preference would be the other way around
