one of your guesses was correct. in my tracks i have 1 mixer's worth of instruments/sounds that get sidechained via automation of the knob on a minimixer (it's much more responsive than automating knobs on the centroid or other mixers), and another mixer's worth of drums and other things that dont get sidechained. saves me from splitting the signal of my kick drum 1000000 times.
