Here's an example of the snare sound I'm taking about.

NOTE: I made this sound using AT Next. The Gravity compressor and better reverb option really improve the quality of the sound.
To replicate this sound, you'll need a snare of your choice, preferrably an acoustic snare with crisp snap to it. Once you have chosen your snare, route it through a loud and long reverb. Disabling the freeverb option helped a lot. Make sure that the feedback on the for the reverb isn't too high as this can conflict with the length of the reverb. You can set the reverb level to taste. I like to attach a compressor after the reverb to measure the loudness of the sound, and to glue the sound together with some gentle compression.
The next step is to attach a gate pedal (blue-green pedal next to the flanger). The key knob is the gate threshold knob, labeled "GATE". The gate pedal will only let a sound pass through if its dB (volume) is equal to or louder than the gate threshold. What this means for our reverbed snare is that the decaying tail of the reverb will cut off sharply once the volume goes under our gate threshold. This threshold depends on your taste. The higher you set it, the shorter and more snappier your snare will become. Having the Gravity on the snare helped me a lot in choosing my threshold.
That's how you make the basic sound. Feel free to experimemt with different sounds and additional effects. Have fun rocking out!
