well, part of what you're doing is correct, which is looking at how the "big" artists make synths, but what you do not want to do is to copy and paste their synth into your song. likely the reason it doesn't sound great is because that synth was made for a different song, not yours. so i would recommend to continue studying the synths made by the good artists, but instead of just copying them, try applying what you've learned to make your own, unique sounds. that's the way i learned, and i found it effective. it's not always going to be easy, but experimenting and trying new things will work absolute wonders. i wish you good luck in your journey in music!
