So you think you're ready to upload ARC samples? Read this first.
The process of recording and uploading samples to Audiotool through ARC is fairly involved. This ensures that our samples meet the community guidelines and are easy to find. Most importantly it can help cut down on unnecessary steps for both the artists and the developers.
After you determine that your samples meet the guidelines (see Production >> Sampling >> ARC Sample Guidelines ), pick the best samples from your batch of recordings. To keep things organised, make sure the samples you choose fit into a specific category (e.g. a specific instrument/hardware or VST, vocals, etc.). Finally, as long as each sample is fairly unique and there are no redundant or repeated samples, you're ready for the next steps.
A good rule of thumb to follow is quality over quantity.
NOTE: For instruments, VSTs or synthesizers, record each note within 1-2 octaves of material. This can consist of riffs, licks, chords, etc. This may be subject to change when Audiotool implements a sampler device in the app.
Here are the steps for upload:
- Verify sample compatibility
- Audiotool prefers specific sample formats in order to be compatible with publishing. To avoid issues, samples are:
- WAV file type format
- 44.1 kHz rate
- 24 or 32 bit preferred
- Use the proper formatting
- In order to ensure packs are properly and speedily uploaded to Audiotool and they can be easily found by other artists, make sure your pack has the correct filename formatting:
- One-shot sample: PKN_Sampl_##.wav
- Loop sample: PKN_Sampl_BPM_Key_##.wav
- PKN: 3-letter shorthand for sample pack
- Sampl: Sample type/name (e.g. Kick, Wobble, ToasterOpen, etc.)
- BPM: 3-digit BPM value
- Key: Scale of loop (e.g. C, F#min, Bb, etc.)
- ##: 2-digit sample index per sample type/name
- Compile your pack
- Each pack should be as small as possible to conserve space. Move all your final samples with the naming conventions listed above to a folder titled with the name of your final pack. In order to quickly upload samples to Audiotool provide an info.txt file in your pack folder with the following formatting:
- info.txt format: filename;tags;desc
- filename: the literal name of each file, ending in .wav
- tags: comma separated tags for each sample
- desc: short description of each sample, must include sound designer, username and sample pack name (see example)
- Example: PKN_Sampl_01.wav;samples,percussion;Sound Designer: @atrc, Sound Pack: Example Pack
- info.txt format: filename;tags;desc
- Upload your pack to Google Drive
- The ARC Google Drive is available to all artists wanting to use, or contribute to, our samples; available here: (link is only visible to registered users) However, in order to add packs, you have to request edit access from Apollo or Infyuthsion
- Create and publish a demo track
- Once uploaded, we'll share a track with all of your samples. All you have to do is create a cover track emphasising the samples you uploaded and publish it! If you can't however, one of the staff would be happy to.
