Potasmic joins Audiotool Dev Team!

We are very happy to announce that https://www.audiotool.com/user/khoi98/ is joining our team! As most of you know, he has already worked on some AT related projects (eg. a MIDI exporter). He did that by reverse-engineering the internal audiotool file format was well as some of our API. That guy really has some hacker qualities!

As for a first task, he is re-implementing the audiotool radio (http://radio.audiotool.com - currently flash only) in plain html / js. After that, he will dive into writing the long-overdue audiotool mobile app!

The app should be a PWA. Hope iOS supports it soon!

It's debatable on whether the radio should be PWA. Most focused feature of PWA is ServiceWorker, which keeps the application accessible even when offline. However, it is obvious that if you're not online, the radio would be useless; so, there's not much of an necessity to implement ServiceWorker at all. It might be a good exercise for me, though! i would definitely try and include a webmanifest which would make the app discoverable under search engines.

<3 yeet the radio is coming back

Why not cache a few tracks from the worker? That way, the radio works offline for a few tracks. Just send a few urls for tracks to the client via the server, and cache them so that they work when offline.

That's a good idea. For me, I think it's best not to opt-in users by default to pre-fetch tracks (especially for mobile devices on data). If this gets implemented, it will be an opt-in thing.

2018-07-09 06:02 · 2018-07-09

Yeah, opt-out would be a bad idea. Caching tracks on wifi and playback when on LTE may even save data for some users.

will he ever make the MIDI EXPORTER work with "audiotool-next 1.0".......or does it already work.....or is it possible to export midi by simply connecting a midi sequencer to chrome browser and recording what Audiotool plays back?

Apollo · reply
2019-04-08 13:08 · 2019-04-08

@micefive1 I never thought about adding support on the hardware side of things for exporting. That's a potentially good idea. But honestly, MIDI export should be a native feature rather than an add-on anyways. Perhaps that's the content for https://www.audiotool.com/board/feature_requests
@andremichelle open source would be awesome, especially since audiotool isn't a subscription service or monetised in anyway. But I get that there are priorities
