Siren's last track on Audiotool may have been a while ago, but that's no reason not to look closer at his work. His Bass-Music-inspired Hip Hop and Drum and Bass have always exhibited a high degree of professional coolness. It was not least this characteristic trait, but also the great chemistry between the three, that enabled him, in collaboration with Icebox and dcln, to bring home the victory for Audiotool in the Collaborative Music Contest 2021. His Insta videos also showcase that we're dealing with a cool cat with a wide range of remarkable skills and entertainment value.

Interview:

About SIREN

I'm a 19 year old producer/rapper/DJ from Penang, Malaysia who is currently working for Goldsounds Academy where we train people who want to be a DJ or Producer. I've started my music production journey on Audiotool about 5-6 years ago.

Describe the style of music you produce

I'm a multi-genre artist who can produce a wide array of genres, but as time moves on the SIREN style becomes clearer and clearer growing into either a deep, vintage lyrical focused Hip-Hop style or Bass Heavy driven electronic music with vocals as a side element.

What is your musical background and when did you start making music?

At the age of 5 I started playing the piano, that served as a basis for my musical journey. But for making my own music, It's when I first joined Audiotool back in 2017 where I dived into music production.

What is your favorite Audiotool device and why?

Easy, the Helm-holtz (Comb-Filter) is my favourite Audiotool device because it gives such a cool effect to a sound especially when sound-designing. I use it for most of my bass heavy sounds on audiotool as it gives this metallic vibe to it.

What is your favorite trick in AT/What technique do you always use?

It has to be the pitch-delay technique that I use to tune vocals, as Audiotool does not have a direct way to tune stuff down or up in pitch without stretching a sample, the pitch-delay is a cool technique that lets us do it using an Effect.

Have you ever had a writer's block? If so, how did you deal with it and what do you recommend to your colleagues?

Yes, countless times actually. But I think I have a good way of dealing with writer's block. The main factor contributing to writer's block is the lack of inspiration at a critical moment. How I counter this is by having ideas ready, either in my voice memos/notepad as memory cues of times when I get an idea. I would recommend everyone doing music to record down an idea once you get it or else it might be too late and you have forgotten the idea that you had. Another thing is to draw inspiration from anything, especially things in your life. Any random thing could spark inspiration, talk to more people, step out of your comfort zone and do things that you wouldn't normally do and ideas will come automatically.

What has helped you the most on Audiotool to improve and widen your musical horizon?

I think it's the moment where I met a fellow former Audiotooler who goes by the alias of Icebox. Leo (Icebox) is someone who is very close to me, and till this day we are still very much in contact. He's the one who advised me to start rapping in my music, and guided me how to incorporate vocals. Outside of Audiotool, as I am self-taught I didn't have a mentor for stuff like mixing/mastering or achieving the industry standard sound, Leo served as my primary guidance in that field, shared with me all his knowledge he has learned from attending SP Mad. Not only that, we have been through countless nights together staying up late just making music. If it weren't for him, I would still be lost.

What do you like most about Audiotool? Is there anything you would like to suggest?

The thing I like about Audiotool the most, is the fact that it's free & allows live-time collaboration with other producers. Not many DAWs achieve this, the fact that you can pack this much power on something that is on the web alone still continues to wow me till this day & it's all for free.

Your message to the community:

Put your ego aside, put your titles aside, put your fame aside. And remember, you are a person making music. Some seek fame, some seek fortune, some seek recognition. And sometimes because of that we forgot about the one most important thing, The Craft. Hone your craft, hone it till you yourself are proud of it and the fame & fortune will come automatically. If you feel down & depressed, if you feel like nobody gives a damn about what you do. It's completely normal, but you have to overcome that and establish yourself. Do not let anybody stop you, they don't have the power to. The greatest enemy? Is yourself.

Edition Audiotool: Siren

Track #1:

triumph by Snio

This is one of, if not my favourite track on Audiotool. Ever, period. Despite being a heavy bass driven song, it carries emotions, meaning and a story. This goes out to snio, being my biggest inspiration icon on Audiotool.

Track #2:

Vulkron ft.Sub4sax - LOL by Vulkron and Sub4sax I remember back in 2017 when I first joined audiotool, I heard this track from Vulkron alongside his other tracks like Torpedo & Joule only one thing came to my mind. (I can make stuff as good as this on this website?) It made me very motivated to learn and produce.

Track #3:

joet (joe X po9t) by joe and po9t

My personal favourite hip-hop/rap song on Audiotool, it’s just near absolute perfection. The delivery of lines, the oldschool boom bap beat, everything.

Track #4:

Valentine - Icebox X sim by Icebox and sim

You have no idea how popular this song is outside of Audiotool, it is stuck in my head. Up until a point it has become a running joke for everyone who knows Leo personally xD

Track #5:

B A C O N by Vulkron and Perdition

And last but not least I gotta show some love to the man Perdition, Perds was the one who showed me Audiotool getting pushed to it’s absolute limit with sound design. And of course I will not forget the time where we were in Uprooted Audio together <3 Good times.

Track #6:

PHONES (Vocal Version) by SIREN

This is probably my best track on Audiotool ever. It's the one time I stepped out of my comfort zone after hearing the instrumental by Leo and started rapping and people loved it. And It’s also one of my best performing tracks on Spotify.
