With his mix of chilled beats, a dose of thoughtfulness and a fair amount of Hip Hop, Fluent hit the mark and quickly played his way into the hearts of the community five years ago. Even when he minimised his release rate, he created an institution with the Beat Tape series which has already been added to the books of Audiotool legends.Thank you for your contribution, Fluent.
I'm from Phoenix, Arizona. I have been using Audiotool for about 5 years now. I first found the site in highschool when I was looking up free online DAWS. I found a few others too, but lets just say they couldn't hold a candle to AT. The fact that this website is free still amazes me to this day. I just want to say thanks to the AT team for everything they do.
I've always been super drawn to creating hip-hop instrumentals, so that's predominantly what I do. I try and keep my tracks interesting enough on their own, so they can stand with or without a vocalist.
Which artist has had the most influence on you (on and/or outside Audiotool)?
Man, I can't even pick one, so here's a list of a few: Opaqity, Hvd, Aura, LaeventAri, Known, Naut, Arcade, Looks, Sim, Ford, Nico, Dove, Rai, Tornsage.
These guys are all so talented, and every time I hear one of their songs there is something special and innovative that i've never seen before. I'll open remix on one of their tracks and be blown away by the creativity. Looking forwards to hearing more!
Who would you like to work /collaborate with on and outside Audiotool, and why?
I've been lucky enough to work with many great artists on here. I still have a few artists on my bucket list, including Ford. I usually learn a lot by working with people, and I try to link with all kinds of different artists.
I'd like to work with Opaqity again sometime too.
Which film/game would you like to produce the score for or contribute a song to?
Anything Sci-fi / Fantasy would be fun to do. I need to learn to play guitar so I can do some indie-folk stuff.
Have you ever had a writer's block? If so, how did you deal with it and what do you recommend to your colleagues?
It seems like I constantly have writers block. Coming back to a project after some time helps a little. Most of the time I just give up and invite someone to the track to help me finish it.
I'd say about 1/500 drafts that I create gets published, and then about half of those get hidden. I'm super indecisive about my music, and I know everyone can relate to that in some regard.
What has helped you the most on Audiotool to improve and widen your musical horizon?
I used to sit in Rabb and watch Laevent create songs. I learned a great deal from that, but I still don't know how to do half of that stuff. Maybe one day.
What do you like most about Audiotool? Is there anything you would like to suggest?
The community side of the website is really what makes Audiotool so unique. On AT, everyone uses the same tools and DAW, so it's really easy to get feedback or tips on the devices. It's cool to see how everyone is able to use them to make completely different things.
Your message to the community:
Everytime I log on, I see something unique. Never stop being creative.
Thanks a-records for the opportunity to do this interview. It makes me feel like I've been a part of the history here, so cheers to that :)
We also asked Fluent to give us his most important Audiotool tracks and his flagship track for the Edition Audiotool album.
Listen and enjoy
Track #1:
why did i fade away by opaqity
This is no doubt one of my favorite tracks. I have always really looked up to Opaqity. He is able to convey a lot of emotion in all of his work, and his melodies are so pleasant. He always has some great percussive work, and everything he has made is such a vibe.
Man, the intro gets me every time. I was in awe when I first listened to this. Torn's work is always moving, and quite unique. I'm always looking forwards to what he will publish next. This is the track that inspired Flight, especially the piano and the thunder in the intro.
My comments on this track still stand 4 years later. Pen's work is so powerful, and we don't get enough of it nowadays. The drop is so fantastic, and I love the reverb on the percs. When the lead comes in, it really takes you somewhere else entirely. I remember trying to make music like this when it first came out, and i'm still impressed by it to this day.
Nobody does it like Ford. The last chord in this song is so emotional, with a perfect amount of dissonance. His mixes are impeccable, and his percussion work is absolutely unmatched. It's great to see him doing so well outside of AT. I was very heavily influenced by the way he used dialogue in his intros, and have done so as well in several tracks.
This track is super unique, and I really love this style. Nico's vocals fit the track so well! If I ever made a movie, i'd try and sneak this into the soundtrack for sure.
