It is my understanding that paths are automatically connected when you drag a device to the middle area. I created some new projects and I noticed that the paths were not connected. When I tried to add these connections, nothing happened.

In the preferences you can set it up to autoconnect devices, otherwise you can create a "wire" by click and drag from output to input.
