I can't get this blue box to go away.

I can make a patterntrack but then I cant change anything else.

Where can I create the pattern-regions?

To remove the blue box you can simply delete the corresponding timeline area

By double clicking the pattern-track?

To control the automation click somewhere in the pattern track as André Michelle explained.
