@chordofdestruction Just remembered I have to fill a bug report about this. Some volume automations create artifacts in the sound. Let me remind myself of what they were. I remember automating Stereo Output volume knob, 909 volume knobs was a bad idea.
The answer has not changed. You just automate the output volume. Or, you can also use a slope pedal on lowpass mode and automate its frequency knob to get a different kind of fade-in/fade-out effect.

Right-click on the master volume and add an automation. There you can control how the volume changes over time.

It's the big volume knob on the only device that is visible when you create a new track.
