Select the percussion instrument (kick, snare, etc.) Then use the tab like buttons at the bottom to sequence a pattern. Each button represents 1/16th of a bar, or, if you're a Brit, a semiquaver.
Once you have done that, you can either leave it as such, or, if you wish to create multiple patterns or choose when within the timeline it plays, you need to create a pattern track within the timeline view.
You can do this from the drop-down menu at the bottom right corner of the 808.
To make longer patterns, simply adjust the pattern length as mentioned in the article I linked to.
