This is probably in the wrong category, but I think there isn't a category for technical/hardware discussions. Maybe someone could make one?
I just moved recently and unfortunately lost my studio speakers, because I had boroughed them from my flat mate.
Would like to start a discussion on studio setups.
Some questions:
- What type of equiptment (Speakers or headphones) do you use?
- Do you take physical aspects of your room into account when placing your speakers / studio?
- Is it worth spending a lot of money for high end speakers if you don't invest in room optimization (like bass traps and whatever else you can do)
I use Yamaha HS5 nearfield monitors. I switched to them a couple of years ago after using a cheaper brand that had a little bit of enhanced bass in the sound. Best decision I've made as far as hardware goes. I also use a pair of Scosche true sound/studio reference headphones, But I'm a believer in the saying that "headphones lie", so they don't get much use. I guess my biggest recommendation is to make sure that whether it's headphones or monitors you get a pair that are true sound.
This book goes into great detail about hardware, speaker placement, room setup, etc...https://www.amazon.com/Mixing-Secrets-Small-Studio-Presents/dp/0240815807
I'm surprised this isnt already a topic tbh! For the bulk of my producing I use Sennheiser HD 598s as they have a pretty flat response and dont boost or cut many, if any bandwidths so its a pretty accurate response. I also have Betron B15s ( i think) for referencing bass levels in the mix as they have a pretty strong lowend, so i mainly make my subs, eq my kicks etc with them. Speaker wise I have Corsair SP2500, absolutely fantastic all round sound and i tend to mix and master on these as they reproduce the whole spectrum pretty accurately. Acoustically, i'm kinda lucky that my room is small, so the sound literally goes straight into my bed and curtains, so my room is pretty 'dead', which helps tremendously. What do you use? The link Jordi posted below is great! :)
I personally use KRK monitors and headphones (KRK Rokit 5 monitors and KRK 6400 headphones) and I'm happy with them, although it's a taste thing. My room isn't treated and a joke acoustically. What you can do is put your monitors away from corners (the more in the center of the room the better) and monitor al low volumes (less influence from the room). I use the headphones a lot. About a home studio setup, you don't need to spend a lot of money. Here's an interesting guide that can give you some ideas: (link is only visible to registered users)
I use KNS 6400 headphones from KRK and I'm sure that there are better ones, but I'm happy. Their response sounds quite flat to me, with a subtle emphasis on the mid-upper range. The author of the video uses the KNS 8400 himself.
Thanks for your inoit jordi! Interesting video. Jonjon has recommended the krks to me too. Will have to check those out since I've never heared them. Which headphones do you use? I've produced on my sennheiser hd 25 but never been happy with the results. I guess they're made for djing and not producing thought.
