when im in the studio making music, and i add layers and instruments, everything goes quieter, dimmer if you will, but when i solo an instrument it is blaring into my ears. why does this happen? its not just 808s its also synths on top of synths.

This sounds like frequency masking.
Essentially, if you have lots going on in the same frequency range, they can potentially cancel eachother out, to a degree.
Alternatively, you're clipping the audio at the output by having everything too loud and hitting the limiter.
Try turning everything down by -6dB on the centroid so that the centroid output/master output never flashes red.
If it's frequency masking, use EQs to carve space out of the instruments
I.e. carve out some of the sub to let the kicj through and vice versa. Cut the kick at 60hz, and cut the bass at 90-100. Boost the the same frequency on the opposite instrument.
