remix privacy settings

Audial · started 2020-08-15 01:19 · updated 2020-11-23 23:47

Hi team,

I think it'd be great to see an option to change privacy settings for remixing tracks. As in a privacy hierachy:

1 - remixing open to all, 2 - remix open to those you follow, 3 - remixing closed, "(maybe another option wedged in there somewhere).''

I know that myself and others would feel more comfortable opening up remixing to certain groups rather than to the whole site which occasionally sees abuse of the remixing system and which sometimes causes users to disable remixing altogether. This feature requests seems like a solution to this issue.

Cheers!

"invite user to remix"

starting a remix of your own track yourself an inviting another user to the draft is an idea I've had and suggested before but it's a pretty hacky fix and means the user always needs to approve a remix. I think giving free roam to people you trust is a better solution for many

no I meant an option to choose who remixes

if someone asks to remix I can click the 'fliter who can remix' button and select them

That would be a great feature! Haha sorry, got the wrong idea there

I support this.

would be nice to clear up duplicate remixes

2020-08-18 07:19 · 2020-08-18

yeah that would be nice if there's a little icon near the remix button that says invite to remix

mhm i was never so sympathetic for track stealers. they aren't 3 they should have the common sense to not make an identical remix. i don't think it matters if they are beginners or not. I'm not going to yell or call them out. however, i will not reason or care about anything they say cuz their ass is reported.

in the past i would have freaked out but that's very over the top

2020-08-19 18:05 · 2020-08-19

haha sandburger said something like, stealing anything else is like stuffing it in your pocket and walking out of the store. stealing songs is like holding it over your head and saying "i'm stealing this i'm stealing this."

I have yet to disable remixing on any of my tracks as I've had a generally good experience with the remix feature and hopefully that will continue. But there are users who have had a very frustrating time with this feature who have disabled remixes entirely. I agree that the minority (probably almost all!) of duplicate remixes are not intentionally malicious so i understand your position but I'm not asking for a feature that will help new users, i am asking for a feature that makes current users more comfortable opening remixing when they otherwise wouldn't.

Obviously i respect whatever decision the team make here, i want new users to have a good experience. I hoped that a balance could be struck that acknowledges current users concerns but i understand that this is a very difficult task. I'm sure you understand that users don't report remix duplicates out of malace but because we cherish our creations and do take it personally when these tracks are duplicated, especially when efforts seem to be made to remove credits to the origin.

The alternative is very hacky, where remixing is closed and users can only remix if OP starts remix themselves and invite the user to the new remix draft. This is the current working method for some and is obviously a less than ideal, it'd be very handy to be able to invite individual users.

This feature request was never meant to be solely about track duplication which is why I didnt mention this by name in the request and i never used the term "stealing" either (as far as i can tell no-one used this term on this board). So instead of focussing only these elements can we talk about the actual request which is about being able to toggle remix privacy settings?

2020-08-20 02:06 · 2020-08-20

right i guess i was focusing on one issue instead of the bigger picture

2020-08-20 02:16 · 2020-08-20

Here's an example of another use of this feature not based around avoiding track duplication: I have recorded a sample which I'd rather not have people use just yet, i could just private the sample and close remixes so noone can use it.. or if i trust a friend I can invite them to remix without worrying about keeping the sample hidden. Or maybe i want to organise a remix series with some friends and again, don't want remixing to be widely available to AT. I could be working on an EP and would like another user to do a remix for it, a remix invite would be ideal here. And if we must talk about track duplication, then this feature would prevent the report bombing of duplicate tracks that you don't like.

2020-08-20 02:17 · 2020-08-20

The problem is not users on AT pubbing identical remixes (I agree it's not a big deal), it is users copying them and posting them to youtube, soundcloud, and spotify.

2020-08-20 02:18 · 2020-08-20

while I agree it is nice for new users to be able to open remixes and learn, I still think the creator should have the right to restrict who remixes

2020-08-20 02:21 · 2020-08-20

Andre, what about a feature that allows users to open your project and play around with it, but not pub it?

owtlet · reply
2020-08-20 02:21 · 2020-08-20

timeline recording would also be removed on that

owtlet · reply
2020-08-20 02:22 · 2020-08-20

then restricting who remixes your track would not be an issue, and new users could still learn

Audial · reply
2020-08-20 02:22 · 2020-08-20

Sounds like an elegant solution!

owtlet · reply
2020-08-20 02:24 · 2020-08-20

this would in fact be even better. Because then users could learn from every track, not just those that have remix enabled

owtlet · reply
2020-08-20 02:24 · 2020-08-20

in addition, it would make peer policing easier, because we could open projects and see what hidden samples are and whatnot

I like this "look inside" feature alternative and agree that this could male sense as a patreon feature :)

2020-08-20 10:07 · 2020-08-20

Can i jusy get clarification on your last point. If a users makes a duplicate remix and downloads the .ogg / mp3 from that and then uploads it off site, have they actual done anything illegal? After all they are just uploading the mp3 from their version of the track, albeit a duplicate.

Maybe even just the ability to look around but not necessarily change anything? As sort of a showcase. And the idea with the Patreon Feature is great!

Love It

1 - remixing open to all, 2 - remix open to those you follow, 3 - remixing closed
4 (new one) - remix open to specific users.
