I have made an entire hour of instrumentals using self-chopped samples, including closed and open hi-hats, and have noticed something annoying when doing so.
In order for the open hi-hats to sound right when a closed one plays, the sample needs to be the exact length in between when it is triggered by the MIDI note and when the closed hi-hat is triggered.
This causes a number of problems when creating a track.
For one, it inherently restricts what length notes you can play an open hi-hat with because you have to chop it beforehand or do tedious sample automation to get it just right.
Secondly, when using for different BPMs, you either have to re-chop all your samples to fit the new BPM or automate all your open hi-hat samples at once and use a calculator to get the correct end percentage for the BPM.
This is especially annoying in my case as my tracks can be multiple minutes long (up to 13 minutes in one case) and have multiple BPM changes. Working on something like that, you can easily be taken out of the groove if every 10 minutes you have to do a calculation for how long your sample should be.
It would be much easier, as well as very useful in a multitude of other ways to people besides me, if there was an option to only play the sample when the MIDI note is active. That way, I can simply align it to my closed hi-hats and have it be the exact length I want. This would also be useful for people who want to sample single notes of an instrument and play with their keyboard. I would also perhaps recommend adding an ADSR function to the machiniste for this exact purpose.
