This feature would make possible to merge several regions residing in adjacent tracks belonging to the same instrument. For example, the performance (notes) for one synth could be composed by layering several note regions playing simultaneously, each one providing one aspect of the melody (sometimes it's practical to work like this). When the results were satisfactory, the regions could be merged, leaving just one region that would include the material of all merged regions in one big region at the top. In case of conflicting notes (same time and same pitch), only the note belonging to the topmost region would be included.
