Many other platforms accompany notifications in their dropdowns with a menu
that allows you to "mark notification read". This makes it so users don't
have to load excessive content if they don't need to. For example,
"username accepted your invitation to trackURL" is safely a
notification I shouldn't need to navigate to to read.

the little notification in the dropdown should be removed after you mark it
