I want to be able to make pre-exisiting automations into virtual copies, instead of having to replace every single clip with a virtual copy.

"make real copy" but "make virtual copy"

You would still have to specify what real automation should each new virtual copy reference.

just group everything, it should be the same once they're virtual

well, mark the subject clip. once everything is made into a virtual copy, they will become that clip.

OR a new virtual copy tool. once a clip is selected, hit 5 and click on a different clip to make them both a virtual copy.
