I propose this scheme to make interface icons feel more responsive and prominent: initially render them in light grey (like now), highlight them in white on hover (it's usual to change the appearance of anything that can be clicked on an interface on hover), and highlight them in cyan when active (for example play icon, loop icon, view mode icon, active panel icon, active tool icon, and so on). Any other button that can be clicked but that doesn't initiate a state (for example the zoom buttons or "accept" and "cancel" buttons in dialogues) can be briefly highlighted in cyan when "active", that is, clicked on.
