Un-checking the box next to "Show peakmeter" in the User Interface preferences merely hides the horizontal peak level meter from the interface, but doesn't remove the area it occupies, which then becomes empty. I think that it would make more sense to hide the peak level meter area completely, so that it could be used by the desktop or timeline.
