GIF as a cover

cleeo · started 2024-01-07 18:26 · updated 2024-01-13 19:31

It would be cool to be able to put gifs for the cover of a track instead of a png or jpg.

But what about:

  • Server space (GIFs are heavier than PNGs)
  • Client CPU usage (Not a very significant boost in client CPU usage though, plus Audiotool's non-studio webpages don't use much CPU anyways)
  • Annoyance (someone could give a ton of people seizures by using a flashing GIF)
  • Hiding inappropriate content (maybe something could be hidden in GIFs, idk, but I think I have seen someone use a GIF to fake a static image that sometimes shows one frame that has not-okay content)

maybe not gif track covers but gif pfps would be cool imo, maybe as a feature for patrons

@bwalwallwa

  • No u (the server did nothing to you)
  • No u (just get a better CPU)
  • No u (people with epilepsy are born with it and it is not fair for you to insult them just because Reality thought it would be funny to screw with someone's life pre-birth)
  • That thing you love isn't to be mentioned here

Epilepsy can be induced

epilepsy is KIND OF AN L TBH

i mean covers are usually small, and i dont think they will add gifs as covers and not some type of protection like epilepsy mode

I think a simple once looped image. Not a repeating loop

2024-01-12 00:44 · 2024-01-12

But even with it being repeated only once, people can engineer GIFs that are more than a minute long that are flashing between black and white at the rate required to trigger epilepsy. Heck, they can even just make it a 1x1 pixel image for efficiency and to stay below the file size maximum. There are a lot of things people can do to circumvent any abuse countermeasure that are added for GIF safety.

not that I condone this, but you can post an nsfw image as a track cover and it'll publish, theres no internal system preventing that. it has to be taken down by mods after the fact. so I dont really see what people 'could do' as much of a rsn to denounce the whole suggestion bc you could just... report it when you see it

  • who is gonna go thru all that effort to MAYBE trigger someone's epilepsy? they would get nothing out of that
2024-01-12 07:13 · 2024-01-12

You'd be surprised at the long list of reasons why some idiot would try to trigger some poor soul's epilepsy. There are people out there who think seizures are funny. There are people out there who want to hurt random people for absolutely no reason. There are people out there who just want to get everyone pissed at them. There are people out there who just do it just to do it because they can. Of the 20+ possible reasons, there is a 99.999999% chance they are all stupid reasons. But we cannot fix stupid, we can only try to suppress it.

well people currently groom eachother on this site and it gets handled the same way as a gif with flashing colors would dawg

2024-01-13 00:24 · 2024-01-13

As cool as it would be to have GIFs as song/album thumbnails, I know of the potential dangers and I don't want epileptic people to get hurt. I also do not want whatever chaos that is going to happen to actually happen.

2024-01-13 01:02 · 2024-01-13

idk if you read my suggestion, what if they had an option to turn them off?, so people with epilepsy can just not see them

or yeah gif pfps
just something that i can put a gif as

2024-01-13 13:55 · 2024-01-13

honestly putting it behind a pay wall would actually be beneficial, at least they will have a reason to be paid.

  • Server space - Unresolved
  • Client CPU usage - Deemed insignificant
  • Annoyance - Resolved - A setting that would be off by default - When off, GIFs are static and stuck on the first frame
  • Hiding inappropriate content - Unresolved
    2/4, not bad so far

make it so only patreon users can make their covers and or pfps gifs, i dont really know much about servers so i wont try to fix it.
but i think that would probably a good fix for all of them, no?

Making strict requirements such as having a patron account attachment or having an account age of at least a year or something before being able to use GIFs does help reduce the odds of coming across a dangerous/inappropriate GIF posted by a dumb snard. Perhaps have the requirements based upon what Call Me Lito and Snadbrugen have in common or something.
