I color coordinate all of my elements in my tracks. lately I've been running out of colors to help distinguish everything. I think adding a way for users to make custom colors would be helpful. Could work for cables too. I'm thinking of something like this (see attachment)

I agree with you. I really want to be able to make drum tracks gray and basslines black.
