I would love to be able to use emoji in my comments on the site, but they are currently unsupported. I understand limiting the character set to avoid control characters, bizarre formatting characters, and so on. I would also understand if you have a philosophical opposition to emoji on the site, for aesthetic or other reasons. I still think it would be a nice addition to help express tone in writing.

Maybe I didn't make what I'm proposing clear. I've had a few incidents where bits of critique I left were interpreted as insults because I didn't properly convey tone. With the short length we have available for comments, we need a succinct way to convey tone. Even if we only allow a small set of facial representations from emoji, that will allow us to have so much more flexibility and clarity in a very quick shorthand.
