Expanding genre selection

aeiter · started 2018-10-01 15:12 · updated 2019-09-04 15:07

I have tracks that do not fit the current genre categories.
I believe it would be a good idea to have a thread for genre suggestions.

Here are two genres that I would be thankful for if added:

Jazz & Alternative

I mainly create Dubstep songs, and I know I can put it under "EDM" but, it would also be cool to see who also makes Dubsteps songs on here, since not many people still make Dubstep, (Except you know, the people who have lots of followers, that everyone knows xD)

If there isn't a genre page for the genre you're interested in, you can still use tags to search for it. For example, if you go to the "Bass Music" genre page (a good place for Dubstep), you'll see tags for #Dubstep, #Riddim, etc. You can click on those and find all the tracks that use that tag.

Dubstep is already under bass music (which is what it is labeled under these days) and Riddim is a type of dubstep. So it’s under the right place rn.

dubstep is dubstep. i must disagree. any other bass music aint half as good

A Jazz or rock genre would be perfect because there's probably artists who would like to record instruments on here.

I agree, I find it difficult for people to find y msuic if the only thing i can label my music as is "other" Maybe a 'folk' or 'singer/songwriter' tag

That’s both subjective and irrelevant tbh.

Acoustic, rock, jazz, all good ideas

We're focussed on electronic music which is already broader than most people believe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres
Rock will be added in our next iteration because there a lots of sub-genres which include electronic music elements.
Jazz is a 'maybe' - it influenced lots of other genres but cannot be produced very good with our existing devices. The tag #jazz has been used very frequently (3400), but I didn't come across a single track that I'd consider Jazz. Can someone point me to a some good Jazz tracks on AT (that are ideally not just recorded and arranged)?

About users suggesting new genres see my recent comment on https://www.audiotool.com/board/feature_requests/tag_based_genres
This covers recurring demands for niche sub-sub-sub-genres but also allows us to determine if another main genre may be needed.

I'm not in favor of an official genre suggestion topic (start one if you like ;) because the results will not be representative in any way.

Status quo is that 'Dubstep' will be added in the next iteration.
'Riddim' wasn't on our list, yet. We'll re-evaluate this.

Convinced - 'Jazz' should be included.

I agree that it is the opposite of electronic music. However, there is a niche of artists who regularly upload their acoustic music into the 'Other' category. As one of those artists and also someone who listens to that genre, its hard to find more people who publish that music.
Acoustic music seems to not be popular because of the lack of availability. The 'acoustic' artists on AT lack a sense of community; a gathering point such as a genre label would be perfect for us.
