Custom effect units would be a future feature that will make you able to apply effects on audio signals in a faster way. These can be created from parts of other effect units.
Where to create custom effect units?
At the bottom of the devices panel, there will be a button, called 'Create Effect Unit." This will bring up a window where the user will construct a device, which resembles an effect pedal. The parts will be displayed on the right of the window. Their name, range, and default value can be changed.
Sharing with others
On the bottom of the window, there will be a save button. This will bring up a window, where you must name the effect unit. You can also give it some tags and a description, similar to samples and presets. Custom effect units appear in the brand new effects panel, which is very similar to the presets panel.
Examples
One could invent effect units, such as "pitch shift," "paulstretch," vocoder," and "autotune."

what actually is a custom effect unit?
its an effect on the synth
i think
I am unsure if you are thinking of a way for users to code custom effects (see https://www.audiotool.com/board/feature_requests/open_source ) or combining existing effects(can be done easily with a standard effect chain)
Effect units apply effects on audio signals. Custom effect units will be customizable effect units.
huh?
so like, an effect unit like the reverb pedal or compressor? or a combination? or what is it specifically?
I thought of saving effect chains the other day, like, you'd highlight all the effects using the select tool then right click on any of the selected devices and you could "save selected devices to effect chain" or something like that.. :/
Yes, these are the reverb pedal, the compressor, and many more.
"what could go wrong? there couldn't be any jank to come outta this"
so do you want an effect chain or programmable stomp boxes?
I want programmable stomp boxes. That's it.
Now THAT is a good idea.
