The Crossfader device in Audiotool has, seemingly, been the least used device since it's early days and introduction. To give it a little more use, it may be useful for Audiotool add another table to the asset panel that allows the user to add existing and published Audiotool tracks (under a specific license: CC-BY-NC-SA or above), I'm calling it Audiotool Stage, but that's definitely a placeholder.
This would make the following possible that could contribute to a more creative and extended workflow:
- Audiotool Community Mixes: Granted, Audiotool also implements support for DJ controllers over MIDI, this would make it simple for labels, networks, and collectives alike to promote and share their artists' music. Or, for artists to make mixes of their favourite music on the Audiotool platform. It could even make a means for bringing back the https://www.audiotool.com/user/a-records Edition Audiotool artist spotlights using the label's first published tracks over albums—as historically, tracks perform much better than albums in terms of recognition.
- Track Previews: Given there's an easier system for tracks to be hidden upon being published, this would give artists the ability to monetize their music without publishing the full version on Audiotool (you know, in case you're paranoid someone might download it anyways using the https://www.audiotool.com/board/bug_reports/the_api_method heh)
- Sample-Based Production: Because of the limitations of samples on Audiotool, Community stigma on their over usage in tracks has been all too prevalent before the samplepocalypse. Given the addition of a sampler in Audiotool itself, this could be the start of real creativity and destigmatisation where it's needed. Sampling is a core part of production, especially in commercially and we'll recognised pieces nationally, since the dawn of electronic music and synthesis.
- Reduce Device Count and Overload: Along with the prior contribution, sampling portions of a song would drastically reduce the amount of devices necessary to 'fill' a track.
I think it's important to note a few things, for example (1) not everyone wants their music remixed or sampled and used in other works (which, I personally disagree with, but) this can be resolved by allowing artists to opt their tracks out from being shown in Audiotool Stage or, only adding tracks under a specific license: CC-BY-NC-SA or above. Also, (2) for this feature to used to it's fullest, and lot of additional features need to be added alongside it. (e.g. DJ controller/mixer MIDI support, adding a dedicated sampler device, etc.) but by just implementing the bare bones of this feature to start, a lot can be done despite the initial limitations. Most importantly (3) this is likely not a priority, which is fair, but unlike other feature requests, and looking into https://api.audiotool.com.../, it wouldn't be a difficult feature to add from a technically standpoint.
Nevertheless I could be missing something(s). Please let me know what you think and maybe some suggestions and perhaps this would be a reality someday.
Thank you in advance.
Cheers!

I'm on board
Awesome, I think this would be great for your beat tapes projects. That way it's easier on the artist and their computers but also it gives you more room to be creative
thats an unusual way to kill lag
Well, if you look at it just for the purpose of killing lag, sure it's a little strange.
But, there are many more potential benefits and creative use-cases to be explored with this.
my only issue with this is how the developers would deal with ram usage due to using full tracks. not everyone has the latest and greatest setups and the app, ime, has a little bit of trouble loading up tracks with a lot of samples.
interesting concept though
Hmm, that is an interesting point.
And, I have noticed the "loading samples" dialogue to be particularly egregious.
I had a request for that as well that can hopefully alleviate that.
But I also think that its less RAM/resource intensive to load static samples than entire setups, especially in the case of beat tapes.
cool concept, definitely on board
