i just do alot digging through youtube. i mainly make dubstep and my main influences for that come from alot of older tunes from when the genre was still establishing itself. my favorite stuff probably comes from Deep Medi and Skull Disco tho. so i get inspiration from guys like Quest, Shackleton, Commodo, kahn, appleblim, gatekeeper, truth, etc.
Photography. I like to imagine soundtracks to different scenes in images. There are certain tracks of mine where I had the cover art first, and decided then, "there's gonna be a track for this".

i find inspiration from music I hear on the radio, or in a movie, or just any sound :)
I used to make themes for my friends characters. Seeing their art brought me inspiration and pushed me to have a sound that matched the character. So now I like to imagine what something would "sound" like, a picture, an idea, anything really.
It could be incredible, but i play guitar, drums and piano, i listen a lot of math rock (Hélices, TOTORRO, Chon...), '70s like rock and psychedelic rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin > Rival Sons, Interpol, Editors, the Black Keys >The Red goes Black...) and multi-influences rock, my favorite genre, because he is weird, particular with different chords (Grizzly Bear, White Denim...). Sometimes, i listen jazz, folk, and lo-fi hip-hop, ambient and chill-out (ChilledCow's youtube channel lo-fi hip hop live is amazing ! :D). There is all of my big influences (i'm 13 yo if you want know). I think i love all of these things because my father (the guitarist on Motis band) listened lot of progressive rock like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson... After, MTV Pop Rock-period with Oasis, RHCP, Muse... And now, lot of math-rock or White-Denim-like band (the D album is one of my favorites).
I recently found the Song Exploder podcast helpful. It's become one of my favorites. The host interviews musicians and songwriters about one of their songs and has them explain how the pieces came together. What's neat is that he removes himself from the conversation so that all you hear are the artists and clips of their music. He always includes the final piece at the end of the discussion. Check it out at http://songexploder.net
Some of my favorites include Bonobo, U2, Jeff Beal (the guy who wrote the music to the US version of the "House of Cards" series on Netflix), and Metallica

I usually think of a random word (like my track https://www.audiotool.com/track/vertigo-p0usgigyo/) and put a sound to the name depending on how you view the meaning of the word. For example, I see someone with vertigo as a dizzy sounding song, so I added a lot of sounds that had a back-and-forth quality. Check it out, you will see what I mean.
for me, i find the best inspiration comes from my observations of the world around me, but i have to experience things the right way, with my imagination. its basically taking any sense that intrigues you (99% for me its an image) and trying to perceive it a different way than it appears to be; once i can open up that underlying essence or alternate existence of something i experience, i find that a windowsill can be melancholy, a plastic bottle on the ground can be anger, the interiors of the bushes in my backyard at sunset can be caves of dark green velvet lit with the suns dying glow, a place to curl up in and weep. thats how i find inspiration for the aesthetic, and once you have that aesthetic you can join it with substance, what you feel and/or how you can relate to that mental image. its like i discover the emotion in the inanimate things that surround me. idk thats how i do it, everyone is different though :)
I look to the sky, and listen around me (At night)
I hear sounds and birds and all that.
Then I relax for a bit, and then my brain says "Hey I found this thing lying around me, why don't we try this idea"
and i go to work
I watch YouTube a lot, which lets me see what is something people really like at the moment and I have always had a thing for anything musical, so I think I have a head start in terms of looking for people who inspire me. I also play the guitar, keyboard and sing a little as well
