the things you unlock by donating through patreon are said to be "non-essential", just handy things that you unlock for the studio. but can we talk about the fact that its the only way to download your songs before uploading AND the only way to get your tracks in WAV. i would argue that those both are kind of essential in any DAW.

I do agree with you. However I think this one belongs in chit-chat, not help.
Wrong board.
oops
it's an incentive. without it, the only thing Patreon supporters would get are some basic color schemes and that's not really worth a whole lot. The team needs money, hosting music is expensive, and they need to make sure they're getting it. They run ads, people get pissed, it's happened already. They charge a signup fee, then people get pissed. Any other form of revenue gets the community riled up, so this is kind of the only option. It's only $1, in that time you can just download all previous/ future tracks and then cancel the subscription.
I believe the general idea behind it is that if you need the professional high-quality download, then you're probably making some form of income. It's vaguely similar to how Unity does freemium - it's 100% free until you make $10,000 or more with your games. Otherwise, there's practically nothing wrong with just downloading your own published tracks. That's kind of the point of the website, with it being heavily based in the community.
As for the download your tracks in WAV - that's a pretty big one that I do agree should exist. Perhaps only the owner(s) of the track have access to the high quality download.
