I'd love for you guys to answer some questions:

  1. What genres do you like the most and like the least?

  2. What elements or instruments do you prefer and not prefer?

  3. What scales would yo prefer to be used or not used?

  4. How would you prefer it to be mixed and not mixed?

5: What structure would you prefer? Would it be structured like a verse-chorus-verse song would or would it be more freeform?

6: Do you value melody, harmony, or rhythm in music or not?

  1. Would yo be willing to listen to odd time signatures or not?

  1. Dubstep, EDM, Electro I like the most. I dislike Hardcore, any genres that end in -core, and Trap.
  2. Piano, orchestral strings, brass. I do not prefer xylophones.
  3. Harmonic Minor scale. I don’t really use major scales often.
  4. Idk how to answer this one, since I suck at mixing.
  5. Tbh, I don’t really know.
  6. I do.
  7. I mean, I liked Polyriddim and that was in 7/4 so... yeah?

  1. Like the most: Lo-fi, Hip-Hop, 2000's R&B, synthwave, alternative rock, anything with rhodes in it
Like the least: Country, "most" trap
  2. Prefers: RHODES, piano, a good snare, deep kicks, bass that accompanies melody
    Doesn't Prefer: Random noise
  3. Prefers: B flat scale is nice, microtonal scales are interesting too, but I don't specifically go looking for it
Doesn't prefer: ...that bloody C major scale
  4. I like those low frequencies to be present, but not too loud. Don't earrape me.
  5. Anything goes, depends on the purpose. If its for a written song then do whatchu gotta do. Otherwise...do whatchu gotta do.
  6. D) All of the above, yes.
  7. Yeah, I don't see why not. But again, I don't really go looking for it

1a: Numetal, Djent, Metalcore, Shoegaze, Industrial, most heavy electronic music, Ambient, Hiphop
1b: Country, Trap, Black Metal, Folk
2a: Guitar, pads, super high-tuned tight snares, noise/distortion, RIDE CYMBALS, odd/diy percussion, piano (when it fits)
2b: Brass instruments (most of the time,) harmonicas, cowbells
3: I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer this
4a: healthy but not overpowering bass, a nice grindy bass in metal (where it fits,) general punchiness, openness (when appropriate,) no excessive treble, sludgy guitars/mid-heavy guitars
4b: I fucking hate abrasive tinny guitars and it's usually in black metal or just general indie metal. It's like someone's pissing on their pickups. I also hate it when there's NOTICEABLE limiting, because it chokes everything up so bad
5: I don't really mind any kind of structure as long as parts of the song don't go on for too long (I'm looking at you, Gojira)
6: As a drummer, I'll say rhythm. But, harmony is just barely under that because I LOVE interesting sounding chords (even though I don't know the names of any of them lol)
7: Odd time sigs everywhere dude, love that shit

  1. like: indie rock/pop, jazz, jungle, hip hop, pretty much anything as long as it's good.
    Oh, and h y p e r p o p.
    dislike: Country.
  2. I like noise when it's used right, along with all sorts of distortion and stuff. I also like percussion.
  3. tRIPLE BEAM BALANCE THANK YOU VERY MUCH
  4. idk, ott or something lmao (for legal reasons, this is a joke.)
  5. uuuhhhhhhhhhh song go brrr
  6. all three are pog, I like me some rhythm tho
  7. odd time sigs are the bomb ngl

  1. i like ambient, folk, vaporwave, and math rock. i dislike country, rap, pop, and (generic) indie rock.
  2. i don't think there are any instruments i really dislike, but i personally prefer acoustic guitars and pianos.
  3. no preference
  4. no preference
  5. no preference (you may be noticing a pattern)
  6. i value all of them, but i also value the lack of them if used well.
  7. absolutely

  1. I honestly have no real preference, I guess extratone, ordinary mainstream trap, lazy pop, country and folk can get annoying sometimes
  2. Love myself a mix between electronic and orchestral instruments + vocals. Piano or guitar parts are something I can always appreciate. I think it is always good to have something acoustic in your track, or at least something electronic with a lot of timbre and details. Also, I prefer music with percussion. But again, not really required and I can appreciate the lack.
  3. I always end up with the same scales, which is not bad, but I am absolutely for different variations. Go crazy.
  4. Every track needs its own unique mix, I think there is no such thing as a baseline for it. I do like very controlled high-ends though.
  5. Again, give the track what it needs. I like gradual build-ups however - slowly swelling, but I also really like when a track does not really have a clear structure.
  6. I value all of them and that is what my ultimate goal is with everything I make (or try to) at least. If you lack all of them, it can still sound good though. It is impressive when these elements are not present, for sure. But frankly, I cant imagine a song without a rhythm, in whatever way.
  7. Hell to the yes.

  1. I like Bass Music, Specifically Dubstep the most. Riddim and Tearout are nice and all, but I think a good Dubstep song beats it all. I hate country it better die out before 2030.
  2. I think most all instruments have their place. I hate when sustained basses like screeches are used excessively.
  3. That fucking jazzy fucking blues shit.
  4. You're supposed to mix it for higher quality.
  5. I appreciate it either or.
  6. Those are so important, like melody and rhythm literally define music.
  7. Hell yes to Polyriddim.

  1. favorites are doom & drone metal, IDM, noise, some ambient, and mathcore
least favorites are trap, j-core/happy hardcore, modern nintendo game OSTs, lo-fi
touhou music can eat a discarded foreskin

  2. extreme distortion and spectral fuckery (if/when applicable)
i hate it when people mix electronic shit, especially EDM or trance, with acoustic shit like orchestras or guitar solos, thanks nintendo
overproduced anime music has ruined the piano for me, so that's nice

  3. fuck major scales, embrace micropolyphony
and stop masturbating around the 12th fret, bluesfag

  4. lots of bass, lots of distortion
i like a very processed or artificial sound
guitars sound really neat when recorded from across the room

  5. depends on the genre
most of the time it's freeform by nature

  6. one part of me says that melody has a place, harmony less so, and rhythm most definitely
the other part of me says nah, it'll be fine MORE FEEDBACK

  7. 100%

1: synth/synthwave/funk, i dislike hip hop
2: non reapeating samples
3: C MAJOR GANG
4:you gotta mix it in a way that you get a harmony while allowing the user to aprecciate the harmony. aka no mixing the same exact thing. my only rule :D
5: im open to any type other than repeating songs, i ussualy lean towards a more build up base because they are the most obvious.
6:bruh what kind of question is that, depends on the genre for which one is the most important but for most stuff id say they are all super important.
7: of course my god that stuff is amazing.

I'm late lol. Just found this and figured I'd respond anyway

  1. I love chiptune/synthwave/ambient and can't stand completely formulaic pop music or repetitive country
  2. There's a special place in my heart for electric guitars and basses. As long as it's not earrape it's usually fine tbh. (screeches aren't funny guys its not funny please stop my ears hurt)
  3. Most scales are good; In particular I enjoy Major 7 scales. (I think that's what they're called? ex. C E G B) Ones I dislike are constant usage of "stock" major keys and scales that sound "wrong", but that's subjective. (ex. B C D D#) That said, almost every chord has an application in my book.
  4. Bass is good but if it's too overwhelming It drowns out the rest of the sound. Other than that most stuff is fine. (unless you pan like a crackhead)
  5. I hate how most of my answers are along the lines of "It's situational" but it is situational. Genres like EDM benefit hugely from a strong structure, while things like Ambient, Trance and Techno can be freeform. My personal favorite is the 3 act song. (theme-ballad-redux)
  6. I value all 3. Harmony is just as important as both Melody and Rhythm, but needs to be used more conservatively to fully benefit from it. That said, you can get away with just a good Rhythm or Melody if it's really worth its salt.
  7. Odd time signatures are a delightful change of pace and a challenge to the composer. I'd be lying if I said I wanted to never see 4/4 again but I think that other time signatures should be explored more often.
