I was fan of Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus, Einstürzende Neubauten, early The Cure and early Sisters of Mercy. Wouldn't call Joy Division Goth but was a fan of them too of course.

new wave though is really good as well! i love love love lovee strawberry switchblade, the b52s, depeche mode, new order, killing joke, blondie, i could go on and on (>_>) really kool that you're into the wave AND goth !!! love to see other people into the subculture, especially people who have been in it for such a long time... like... 40 years?? dude.. you basically watched it bloom.
yeah man :) i cant imagine seeing the genres in their peak time it mustve been awesome (^_^) im kinda the opposite, ive been getting into older and older stuff/niche and more niche stuff from some older genres, especially post punk, new jack, goth, wave, etc etc ... crazy how taste changes as you grow older i suppose huh?

yeah joy division isn't really goth but they had the sound and i think thats why they get associated with the scene.

I was. That's more than thirty years ago ;) I can only listen to a few of the old songs anymore. Now I'm more into newer Alternative stuff
