How do you collaborate and why?

Hello everybody,
as some of you might know I'm doing a research project on collaborative music making. Therefore, I'd like to shed light to the two differing modes of collaboration that audiotool allows for that I'm referring to as "sequential collaboration" (one user works in the app, then leaves the app, tells the other partners that there are edits, then they go in,…) and "live collaboration" (collaboration partners join the app at the same time to work together on a track). I'm especially interested in specific strategies for these modes as well as differences between the modes (advantages/disadvantages) and their impact on the creative process.

To make it a bit easier I formulated some initial questions:

  • How do you decide how to work together in a collab (in respect to sequential or live collaboration)? What parameters might influence this decision?
  • How do the two different modes affect the creative process during the collaboration and the resulting track?
  • What advantages does a sequential mode have over a live collab or vice versa? What can you do in one mode that you can't do (or do differently) in the other?
  • How do you achieve a result that satisfies everyone involved?

Hoping for some thoughts and getting a vivid discussion going! As always, if you have questions, let me know!
Best
Maurice

this is a really great question since it's such a mystery on how to make collaborations work well. i have collaborated with many people before, tried a unique strategy every time and i have no idea if it seems to work ;)

the core of it really just seems to boil down on how creative the artists are feeling and how compatible they are.

i have tried coordinating with artists by telling them what i want to hear, and what to change. but often people don't like to listen, since i assume we have different visions. and alot of the time i don't get anything useful back from them, like feedback on what i just told them. for example. "good idea but maybe we should do it differently"

the compatibility of artists is very ambigious. i have no clue what it really is. i don't think its if they create the same type of music, but it might help. i think it is down to their personality or their way of music production.

another thing that makes collaborations so unnerving is hearing what the other artist is creating. he places a synth and starts working on it and you can hear him doing stuff with it, but it sounds terrible because you don't know what they are trying to make and you forget that that part of the track is not finished yet, and you want to critisize them. atleast, that is for me :) i have no idea how others feel. i am guessing collaborating on a track sequentially like you said might be beneficial to that. but then again there is the surprise of opening the draft and it sounds worse than how you left it. probably due to the artist not finishing what they are doing, and lack of coordination.

Thanks! if you could give me your email that would be great, the one I found on your youtube profile returned a failure message after sending.

I need to collaborate with someone who would create a music background to my songs. I am into song writing but not into instrumentation, can someone from this platform create something for me. thanks

@tmthing2 just curious: why did you just say "no"? It seems to me that this request for collaboration seems inappropriate to you and I'd really like to know why as this might lead me to a better understanding what collaboraton in this community means and how it works resp. does not work. can you elaborate?
