There's always a community for ambient music. It's crossed over to the mainstream a few times in music history too (not just when Brian Eno started his experiments). Ambient music is often used in playlists for relaxation, sleep and such. On the other hand we have the Aphex Twin enjoyers. Those two have a decent following and are fairly popular. At least that seems like a place to start. Is it enough for an artist that isn't Aphex Twin, Eno and such to make the rounds and make it in the industry? IDK. There were times in history where ambient was more popular, and maybe they'll come back. Either way, the genre has left its mark and legacy that can be found across all of music.

And then there's "Ambient" music which is just soundscapes or alien sound design
but we don't talk about those ever being mainstream
false, ambience is litterly everywhere, the fact that you dont realize it just shows you how good the artists are at making their ambience, aside from that you cant really make foley and slow pads mainstream, most people look for trap and rap in general, unless you are reffering to the music community those who despise trap (me) and think it shouldnt be the first thing you think of when you mention music; yes it is big, just look at sleep, this guy is amazing and he pulls in numbers each track and he isnt even that old in audio tool, so dont lose hope and keep improving and stay producing
