Those arrows seem to not exist in Open Sans, so your browser is free to choose another (hopefully similar) font. that's called a "Zwiebelfisch" (onion fish) in German ;)

Huh? That's so strange. So, what is the arrow intended font? It can't be open sans since i tried downloading it just to make sure and put in the alt key for an arrow and it still does not show up as the intended arrow.

Fallback is "[sans]" - a placeholder where the browser decides what to do. You can configure that in some browsers.
